A simple guide to Umrah clothing: how men wear ihram, what women wear, what to avoid in ihram, and what to pack from the USA or Canada.
One of the first questions every pilgrim asks is what to wear. The rules are simple once you know them. Here is a practical guide for men and women traveling from the USA and Canada.
When ihram starts
Ihram is the sacred state you enter before Umrah, with the intention (niyyah) and the talbiyah. Pilgrims flying in must enter ihram before passing the miqat. On most flights from North America to Jeddah, the miqat is crossed in the air, so many men change into ihram before boarding or during the flight when the crew announces it. Flying to Madinah first? You can enter ihram later, at the miqat outside Madinah, before traveling to Makkah.
Ihram clothing for men
- Two plain white cloths, unstitched: the izar is wrapped around the waist and reaches below the knees; the rida covers the upper body and shoulders.
- Head uncovered: no cap, hat or head covering while in ihram.
- No stitched, fitted clothing: no shirts, pants or underwear made to the shape of the body.
- Footwear: simple sandals or slippers that leave the top of the foot uncovered.
- Allowed: a belt or money pouch to hold the izar and carry your passport, a watch, glasses, and an umbrella.
- Tip: buy two sets. Cotton or towel-type ihram is cooler; practice tying the izar at home before you travel.
What women wear for Umrah
Women do not have a special ihram garment. A woman enters ihram in her regular modest clothing.
- Loose, modest clothing that covers the body. Many sisters wear an abaya or a long loose dress with a hijab.
- Any color is allowed. White is common but not required.
- Face and hands: while in ihram, a woman does not wear a niqab (face veil fitted to the face) or gloves. Many scholars allow lowering a loose part of the head covering in front of men who are not mahram.
- Comfortable shoes for long walks on marble floors. Socks are allowed for women.
- Tip: pack light, breathable fabrics and at least one extra abaya. Choose clothes that are easy to move in for Tawaf and Sa'i.
Things to avoid in ihram (men and women)
- Perfume and scented soap, lotion or deodorant after entering ihram. Use unscented products.
- Cutting hair or nails until Umrah is complete.
- Arguing, fighting and marital relations.
If something happens by mistake, ask a scholar or your group guide what to do.
What to pack from home
- 2 ihram sets (men) and 2–3 abayas or loose outfits (women)
- Unscented soap, shampoo and deodorant
- Sandals for men and comfortable walking shoes for women
- A small bag for shoes at the Haram
- A money belt for passport and cards
- Light layers: Makkah is warm, but hotels and the Haram are air-conditioned, and winter nights in Madinah can be cool
Different views
Scholars differ on some details (for example, which sandals are acceptable or how women cover the face). When in doubt, follow the scholar you trust, or ask your group guide.
