Ramadan 2027 is expected around February 8. When to book, which part of the month to choose, and what US pilgrims need for a Ramadan Umrah from New York.
Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin around Monday, February 8, 2027, with Eid al-Fitr around March 9, 2027. Both dates are astronomical estimates and depend on the moon sighting. If you want to spend part of the month in Makkah and Madinah, this is the time to plan, because it is the busiest Umrah period of the year.
Which part of Ramadan should you choose?
Most trips from the US are built around one of the three ten-day parts of the month. Here is how they differ in practice:
- First ten days (around February 8–17): usually the calmest of the three. A good choice for first-timers, older parents and families who want more room in the Haram.
- Middle ten days (around February 18–27): crowds build, but it is still easier than the end of the month. You still get a full Ramadan routine of iftar, Taraweeh and suhoor.
- Last ten nights (from around February 27–28): the most sought after, because pilgrims seek Laylat al-Qadr. Expect the largest crowds of the year and the earliest sell-outs for hotels near the Haram.

When to book
Book as early as you can, especially for the last ten nights. Hotel rooms close to the Haram are limited, and flights from New York into Jeddah and Madinah fill up in the same weeks. A good order of steps:
- Decide which part of the month you want and how many people are traveling.
- Check every passport now. Renewals take time, so don't leave this until January.
- Choose your hotels and flights, and get the full details in writing.
- Apply for your visa, then book your Nusuk permits.
- Get your vaccines and start preparing the rituals.
Documents, visas and permits
US citizens can apply for the Saudi tourist eVisa, which covers Umrah outside the Hajj period. Saudi authorities decide every visa, so apply with enough time. Read our Umrah visa guide for US citizens for the details.
Every pilgrim also needs an Umrah permit in the Nusuk app, whatever visa they hold. A visit to the Rawdah in Madinah needs its own separate permit, and during Ramadan these slots go quickly.
Saudi Arabia's published calendar for the 1448 season lists March 9, 2027 as the last date for Umrah visa issuance, March 23 as the last date to enter on an Umrah visa, and April 7 as the last date to depart. Rules can change, so we confirm them when you book.
What Ramadan in the Haram is really like
- Crowds: plan your Tawaf and Sa'i for quieter hours. Late morning is often easier than the hours around Taraweeh.
- Sleep: nights are long with Taraweeh, Tahajjud and suhoor. Rest during the day, and pace yourself in the last ten nights.
- Getting to prayer: streets around the Haram close to traffic and fill early. A hotel within walking distance matters more in Ramadan than at any other time.
- Repeat Umrah: in Ramadan 2025 the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah encouraged visitors to perform Umrah only once during the last ten days to reduce crowding. Expect similar guidance and check Nusuk for this season's rules.
- Weather: February and March are much milder than summer, though Makkah can still feel warm in the daytime. Pack light layers and comfortable shoes.
Traveling with parents or children
The last ten nights are physically hard. If you are bringing older parents or young children, consider the first ten days, or ask about wheelchair access and hotel distance before you commit. Tell us about any health or mobility needs early so we can match you to the right hotel.
